Sandblaster February 2024

From our Club President

Bryce Landrud

President, Twin Lakes Board of Trustees

February already! As a lifetime outdoorsman in both work and play, February has always signaled, for me, the figurative end of winter. The days are getting longer finally, and once in a lifetime we get 4 days in a row in the 60’s. The turfgrass will emerge from its semi-dormancy and hopefully the weather and conditions will begin to give us more ‘lets golf!’ days.

Most of us are trying to wait patiently for the action to begin on the pool and pump systems. The latest report is that the pool permit is in final approval and demolition/construction will start almost immediately. The pumps are being assembled; the new pipe is in the upper parking lot. That should be starting soon as well.

The most exciting news on the block is a ‘new member initiative’ that we will be embarking on starting very early in March. More information on this is elsewhere in this edition, and I can’t wait to join up with you to get it rolling.

We are also about to begin interviews for a new Greens Superintendent; we’ve done initial informal interviews and have several well-qualified candidates. The Board expects to have made a selection by the end of the month. When on the course, please thank ALL of the crew members for the awesome job they’ve done stepping up and keeping our course in as good of a condition possible for the recent weather challenges we’ve had.

Finally, thank you all for your kind words and encouragement to me personally. There are a few challenges to this position that aren’t exactly in my wheelhouse, but everyone on the BoT as well as throughout the club are helping me adjust. Please, always feel free to contact me should you have questions, concerns, or just want to help!

Swing easy,

Happy February everyone! After a great January, we are looking forward to a very busy 2024 with lots of fun events and plenty of ways for you to enjoy your wonderful club.

First, I would like to extend a very special thank-you to our golf course crew for the extra work they did to clean up the tree limbs and debris from the course in the wake of the huge windstorm. It is greatly appreciated. On an organizational note, we would like to ensure we have updated records of locker information. Please contact the office if you are currently using one, telling us your name and locker number.

As Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, there are still a few days left to make your reservations for the event! Please call Molly to make your reservations before February 8th. Additionally, we hope you can join us for Superbowl Sunday! There will be a fun golf tournament in the morning, followed by the football game. If you can’t join us for golf, we would love for you to come and enjoy the game on the big screen in the Lounge with all your friends. Looking into the near future, also mark your calendars for our long-standing tradition of Easter Brunch on March 31st.

This year is going to be a great time of membership growth here at Twin Lakes. With the new pool and great course conditions, it is going to become the place everyone will want to join. In the coming weeks, we will be announcing an exciting membership program, the success of which will be based on member referrals. If you know anyone who has expressed interest in joining Twin Lakes, now is the time to reach out and share with them how wonderful it is to be part of such a great club.

I am excited for another great month and look forward to seeing you all at the club!

We want to celebrate you each month in the Sandblaster! Email your name and birth month, or your Anniversary month to Janel!

Hello Everyone!!

As we enter the month of February 2024 looks promising as we start out with Punxsutawney Phil predicting an early spring. So, stay away from anything Buckeye Chuck says and cross your fingers that Phil is correct.

We completed our final Winter Tour Series event Saturday with 62 participants. The forecast at the beginning of the week was fantastic and what a great weekend of weather we had along with a sunny week ahead. The format for the event was “Lone Ranger Shamble”. Our Winter Series #4 winners were Bradley Haley + Andrew McLaughlin + Kyle Waltos + Nolan Haver with a Stableford score of 93. Our Canadian Skin winners were Andrew McLaughlin, Michael Luinstra, Sharon Lorenzo, Steve Snider, Andrew Pommer, Tim Finch, and Grant Hulse, each receiving $ 20 per skin. Our KP on #3 winner was Nathan Bernier receiving $20 for his 8 3/4 “shot onto #3 green. Our KP on #11 winner was Jill McBroom with her 6’9” distance for her $20 payout. To view all the results, use GGID winterf224 on the Golf Genius app.

Our next event is this weekend on Sunday, Feb 11, our 3rd Annual Super Bowl Scramble. We still have room for sign ups and should be lots of fun prior to watching the Superbowl. Entry fee for this event is $50 which includes “Kick Off” tailgate breakfast burritos, tournament competition, and “Nacho Bar” afterwards while you watch the game. Guests are invited to play with their $60 entry which includes their green fee. Carts are optional at $17.50 + tax per rider.

We will be having our annual Pro Am Draw evening planned for late February/early March. We are waiting for our selections to come back from the PGA section office. Once we get our allocations, we will send out the notification so that you can plan your Pro Am. For those members new to this program, this Pro-Am allocation draw is an opportunity for our members to travel to local area golf clubs with one of your club professionals and compete against golfers from other clubs. Keep your eye open for an e-blast with the date and specifics concerning the Pro-am draw. The email blast will contain a link so that you can see the dates/times/courses. Our Target date for the draw is Friday, Feb 23rd after the member draw.

Our 2024 calendar of events are geared towards a busy and fun season of golf at Twin Lakes Country Club. We are currently working with vendors to provide you with individual Fitting Experiences. We will keep you posted to the dates/times as we get closer to spring. We will also have them posted on the membership calendar. Our new inventory for the coming golf season will start arriving throughout the month of March and into April. If you are planning on attending the Seattle Golf Show in March, make sure to get a head start taking advantage of the hitting bays to try out the 2024 equipment line. Take notes (or pictures) on the product that you are testing and interested in purchasing. We can special order the product for you if it is not in the shop. Our hope is that you make your golf shop your first stop when looking for golf equipment. Try before you buy is always what you want to do.

Every year with the buzz of new equipment, comes the golfing fever. So, when you have a moment, let us look at your equipment to see if you need new grips and/or let us check to make sure that you have the proper grip size on your clubs. This goes for your putter as well. For those members with Scotty Cameron Putters, we have a couple of replacement grips that just arrived. Need to replace the spikes on your shoes? Bring them in as well. If you need a new pair of golf shoes, we have the new lines from Under Armour, PUMA, and Adidas coming in April just in time for the start of the season. Looking for an MGI electric pushcart? We have a few of the new AI’s coming in March.

We are also starting to put together our spring lesson schedule. Many have come into the golf shop asking about our lesson services. We are here to help you with your putting, short game, as well as your driver, fairway woods, and hybrids. Have a question or clarification with something you read or watched on the television? Come on in and ask away…. We want to help you understand your swing better. For the ladies, Kathy is working on “Swing into Summer” 4–5-person group lessons. Let Kathy know if you are interested in more information regarding these clinics. For the juniors, we are in the process of finalizing the PGA Jr. League (13yrs & under) information for sign-ups. Let Ben know if your junior is planning to participate this year and we will get more information to you regarding dates and registration fee. Shortly, we will have information sent out regarding our junior program “Kick Off” and camp dates for 2024.

A friendly reminder for those that still have credit book money to spend – the credit book money expires on March 31st. We don’t want you to lose out on the opportunity to get it spent so if you need help spending your credit book money and possibly something special ordered, please stop by and have a conversation with us.

For those members with private carts, your first half of yearly renewal fees were charged to your account at the end of the year. We have your 2024 cart stickers in the golf shop for you to pick up. The second half of the renewal fee is charged July 1.

For all members who ride, we are trying to get carts onto the golf course as soon as possible. The weather last month didn’t help with the conditions but the sun this week should help immensely to dry the course. As those players have noticed, we haven’t even been able to get our mowers out to cut the grass. As soon as we can get our mowers on the fairways, we will have an update to the cart restrictions.

We would also like to remind everyone once again that during the cold mornings to call the golf shop to make sure that the course, driving range, putting/chipping area are open for use. We still have an opportunity of frost delays during this month. Upon checking into the golf shop prior to starting off, the team will keep you informed of the course conditions and any/all cart restrictions as well as if it is a #1 or #10 tee start. We have a good supply of range balls moving forward so we should only be having to close the range on Fridays from 4-5pm to do a clean pick for the weekend so we still suggest calling ahead for those late afternoon practices to make sure that you are good to go when you get here.

Lastly, you will notice a couple of missing team players the next time you are in the golf shop. Zach Burnaby has accepted a job with Microsoft and is starting this month using his programming degree from Gonzaga. We are excited for Zach to start off his career and we will miss him around the club. The other gentleman that has left is Derek Kaapana. Derek is a sophomore at Highline College and is taking time off to focus on his business design degree. We have a few months before the season starts to find a couple of team players to fill their shoes. We do have a face coming back this May just in time for the Women’s Invitational. Cameron Altmeyer will be interning with the PGA Section office this summer and will be working here on the weekends while he is in town before he goes back to college. A few of you were able to visit with Cameron last month while he was here talking about this opportunity and Cameron is excited to get reacquainted with everyone in a few months.

Enjoy your week of sunshine! We will see you around the club.

Kathy, Ben, Gabriel, Kaleb, Mikey, Taryn, Joe, Aiden

Greens Committee

January gave us stretches of record low temperatures producing freezing ground that took extra time to thaw, 14 consecutive days of rain, some snow, a couple different windstorms, a little fog, very little sun, and unfortunately some days where the course needed to be closed.

We thank everyone on the grounds team for everything they do to keep the course playable and enjoyable.  As we make the turn into February we are now over the 5:00pm sunset hump; better weather, longer days, and more golf are ahead of us.

In the near future, you will see several opportunities to volunteer with work parties to help speed up improvements to areas of need at the course.  We will host several fairway sanding parties and would love to have you join us.  Be on the lookout for specific dates and opportunities soon.

Please do your part and help maintain our golf course: utilize the sand bottles to fill divots, repair ball marks, and follow cart path rules.

Our committee is continuing to work on our bunker, tree maintenance, and tee box area improvement recommendations and we look forward to providing you with more updates as they come.
