Sandblaster June 2023

From our Club President

Erika Sheffield-Stull

President, Twin Lakes Board of Trustees

Hello Twin Lakes!

We have come into our busy season and Twin Lakes is humming with activity and opportunities to play golf. The weather has been phenomenal, and the course could not be in better shape, so bring a friend or two out and show off to them what a great place Twin Lakes is. A perennial reminder to do your part to take care of the golf course: keep carts 30 yards away from greens and tee boxes, fill your divots, rake bunkers and repair your ball marks on the green. For a quick refresher, please visit this article from USGA: 5 Ways Golfers Can Care for the Course.

The Women’s Invitational always brings a lot of energy and excitement to the club and the players had two unprecedented good days of weather. Thank you to the volunteers who came out to help prep and clean the Club ahead of the Thursday Invitational start. The Men’s Invitational is around the corner the 7th-10th, two couples’ mixers on the 15th and 18th and the Cross-Country Horserace on June 21st. Twin Lakes is proud to host the Northwest Women’s Open June 26th-28th. This is a prestigious event, and our golf course looks outstanding. Kathy has stocked the pro shop with awesome apparel, shoes, clubs and accessories, come see what’s new! The Kentucky Derby had great attendance, I’m looking forward to our annual Martini and Jazz event, back on the 23rd! The pool is open on only weekends until school is out in Federal Way.

Proprietary members, please check whether you are receiving emails from the Club. If you are not getting communications regarding a potential upcoming assessment to update the irrigation pumps and swimming pool, please contact Dave Hobson or me directly so we can reactivate Constant Contact and send you our previous communications. The Club will host two Town Halls to discuss the upcoming projects – they will be June 19th and July 11th at 6:30PM.

Twin Lakes has some unique opportunities available to members that will contribute to the revenue needed for these and other projects that we need to ensure the future of our club. Look for announcements on Lifetime Memberships (limited to 5) and marketing sponsorship packages. For more information, please reach out to me or Dave Hobson.

I look forward to seeing you around the Club!

Sincerely,

Erika

It is June already. At the end of May we had our Women’s Invitational. It was a lot of fun; great weather and the golf course was in awesome shape. This month we have the Men’s Invitational, and the weather looks good. The golf course will be in fantastic shape, the golf shop staff is ready, and our servers have the beers on ice ready to go. The Snack Shack will be open on the Weekends & Monday until School Gets out. We have expanded the menu and added some fun adult drinks (only available in the Snack Shack).

I’d like to thank Rick Noble for donating the two beautiful hanging baskets each year that brighten the Club entrance.

In May we had fantastic volunteers work day – I want to thank all members that came out and helped.

I am excited about our new Lifetime Membership Opportunity –See below for more information.

What a change in the golf weather we are having, and I believe that you would all agree that it is about time.  We ended May with our Women’s Invitational and our Memorial Day Couples event and we begin June with our Men’s Invitational this next week.  In between, we have enjoyed our Tuesday Women’s 18- & 9-hole competitions, our Wednesday Night Men’s League, and our Couple Mixers on Thursday nights.

Wednesday starts the Men’s Invitational with their practice round starting at 1pm.  The Driving Range will be closed at 3pm so that we can get all of the range balls off the grass so that the grounds crew can mow Thursday morning.  The driving range will open up after 2:30 on Thursday after the men tee it up for their first round of the invitational.  The range will be open Friday morning after 11am for those wishing to practice.  And on Saturday, the range will be open after 2pm.  This gives the staff time to pick the balls off the range and have them ready for you to use.

Speaking of the driving range, we are very excited about having brand new balls for the members to use.  We are also disappointed in the fact that the inventory has depleted rapidly in a week.  These range balls along with all the buckets that are missing, make it hard on the staff to provide you with the service level that we are intending to give you.  We are asking all of you once again to bring back all the buckets that you may have along with the golf balls so that all members have an equal chance to practice.

Our Twin lakes PGA Jr League teams are hosting a match here on the 18th starting at 2pm.  We will be hosting Auburn GC, Northshore, and Glen Acres.  They will be using the front 9.  For those withing to play in the afternoon, the back 9 will be open after 4pm for tee times.

For the men’s league participants, we have the sign up open for the Men’s Presidents Cup.  the matches will begin July 1. This event is a match play format where you pay in pods and the winners of each pod advance to the final match play event to determine the overall winner.

As I am writing this column, we are having our annual Battle of the Sexes.  Golf Genius will have the results posted.  Use GGID tlmixers23 to view all of the couple’s mixer results as well as to sign up for the couple’s mixers and events.

Mark your calendar to participate in the Cross-Country Horse Race on the 21st starting on #10 at 5:30pm.  The sign-up sheet will be posted in the golf shop.  It is a fun event to participate in or just to come out and watch the players play hole 10 to the 11th green; Hole 12 to the 13th green; Hole 14; and then Hole 15 to the 16th green.  This is a mixed event using the ABCD random draw to determine the pairings.

Looking for some new apparel for the golf season?  The Golf Shop is fully stocked with great product for both men and women.  We also have a few demo/fitting days with PXG on the 7th; XXIO on the 14th;  and TaylorMade on the 29th.

A reminder that with the amount of play the golf course has and will be receiving, it is vital to keep up with sanding divots, raking bunkers and fixing ball marks. David Milligan’s staff has worked extremely hard to get the course in great shape and mother nature has really helped us this spring.  So, I ask you all to help do our part to keep it going in the right direction.

Regarding booking of tee times, with the golf course starting to get busier and busier we need to make sure that if you booked a tee time and are not going to play, please call us and get it cancelled.  This will give every member a fair and equal chance to enjoy our golf course. If you can, please try to add all the names of players into your tee time online and/or when you call the golf shop to reserve. This will also ensure we have all your golf bags and push carts ready for you upon arrival.

Lastly, I want to let all of you know that Steve Hussey’s last day with us will be on the 18th.  He and his family are relocating to the Gig Harbor area at the end of the month.  Steve has been a face of the golf shop for many years and has been a great asset to me and the operation since arriving here in December of 2021.

Please make sure to stop by prior to the 18th and say good-bye.  I’m pretty sure that many of you will still have close contact with Steve.   He promised to come back around from time-to-time for a game of golf or two, but he will be missed by all of his co-workers on a daily basis.

For now, enjoy the great weather, the time you are able to spend with your family and friends, and most of all enjoy swinging the golf club!

See you around the club!

It’s golf tournament season!   The weather is cooperating and the course is in great shape.

We had a recent work party and we were able to do some sanding.  Many thanks to those that gave up their Monday to help with this effort.   However, we were unable to complete the entire course.   We will be hosting many outside players this season in our tournaments.   So let’s do some extra sanding out there as you playing your normal round.  The sand is nice and dry now and its prime growing season.

Poplars number 1-3 as numbered from the #7 tee toward #7 green, will be removed later this year.    As part of that effort, all the foliage has been removed from those trees.    Later this fall the remainder will be removed.   We will remove the trunks later when the ground is more firm.  This will allow us to get a large truck in there to haul away the substantial logs without doing as much damage to the course.

For all you walkers, we have mowed some new walking paths off the tees to the fairway.   They are not as green as the surrounding areas yet, but will be as they get used to being cut shorter.  We are still evaluating some other areas that may benefit from a new walking path.

This month we’re giving out Friends of the Golf Course awards,  Sandies.   For best performance sanding and pitch mark repairing during normal play, the Sandie goes to Dan McNeil.    Dan plays more golf than 3 regular members and he sands twice as much, do the math.

For best performance in an organized sanding event, the Sandie goes to Scott Kawahara.   Scott attends most of the events and sands profusely, even if he is one of the few that show up.    Please congratulate these members on their awards when you see them.   They can go pick up their awards from Kathy in the Pro shop.

If you see any members that you’d like to nominate for a future award, send their name and a brief description to our receptionist as below and the committee will determine the winners.

Let’s remember our power cart etiquette.  Repair those divots in the fairways and pitch marks on the greens.    If you see a playing partner forget, please remind them too.   When our course looks great it’s much easier to attract new members.

Remember if you have any issues or questions.   You may email our receptionist, using receptionist@twinlakesgolf.net.    She will forward the email on to the committee.

See you out there.

Teri Jones “mom” of Jen Glasgow. Started golfing in 1962 because she married a golfer and wanted to spend time with him. Teri started golfing in Long Mont, Colorado. Best thing about golfing is being outside, walking the courses, it’s an outdoor activity, and the challenges. Not had a hole in one yet!
Jen Glasgow “daughter of Teri Jones”. Jen started golfing in 2014 because she lived on the course and her Mom was a golfer. The best part of Golfing is the friends she enjoys golfing with. Jen has had one hole in one on #16.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Mark your calendars! June 23rd is Martini and Jazz night from 6-9pm. This event led to a packed house last year and we cannot wait to do it again. The jazz band will be set up in the lounge and there will be drink specials all night. Get there early to secure your spot in the lounge!

Save the date: Monday July 10th for our Food Truck Extravaganza.  Enjoy great food, a Kid Zone with family friendly games, swimming, and a raffle for prizes.  Open to everyone!

The sunshine is here, and the social committee is getting wild with the Corey Wilds Band on August 18th. The End of Summer Bash will have games, raffle prizes and so much more. Keep an eye out at the club for more details! We can’t wait to fill the club with good music and turn things up a bit!

As a look ahead to the rest of the year, Ladies Day will be on Sunday, November 5th. We sold out tickets last year, so keep your eyes out for details in the coming months.

The social committee activities help benefit the tennis/pickleball court project the club is currently undergoing.

If you are looking for a way to get involved, we have openings on the social committee and would love to have you join. Reach out to Chris Witmer with any questions.
