From our Club President

Erika Sheffield-Stull

President, Twin Lakes Board of Trustees

Dear Twin Lakes Members,

We are officially into the “-ber” months, but don’t fret, there’s still a lot of great golf to play! Early September looks fairly dry and sunny, so come get in some rounds before the rain arrives. Once again, I’m writing to you while on the road- I just landed in Boston and am headed to Gloucester to join dear friends for lobster fishing and the Schooner festival for Labor Day.

Several members have noted recent violations of the club dress code. Our dress code is published in multiple places and there really is no excuse for members and guests not to adhere to it. Women on the golf course are required to wear shirts with either sleeves or a collar and midriff shirts are not allowed; skirts and shorts should come to the ends of fingertips. Men’s shirts require collar and sleeves. Denim is never allowed on the golf course. The Board will take action, including suspension of membership, of members and their guests who are in regular violation of our dress code.

If you are a Proprietary Member (Juniors too), you should have received a Constant Contact email last week announcing our timeline and the 2025 Nominating Committee for our upcoming Board elections. Membership longevity at Twin Lakes is not a prerequisite. Board candidates should exhibit a willingness to serve, the ability to work collaboratively with staff and volunteers, and the desire to drive continuous improvement at Twin Lakes. The minimal time commitment is a 2-3 hour Board meeting on the last Monday of the month and a committee liaison assignment where attendance at your assigned committee is expected. Many Board members take on additional roles and responsibilities based on their areas of expertise – we have Board members who are making tremendous positive impacts on our club! I hope you consider running for one of these critical positions. The self-nomination form can be found here.

If you want to volunteer but can’t run for the Board, we would love to have you on a committee! Even small volunteer contributions have a big impact. Please reach out to me (ErikaSBOT@twinlakesgolf.net) or Tom Coburn (tcoburn@twinlakesgolf.net) and we’ll connect you to the right people.  Twin Lakes has made remarkable progress specifically in the areas of Finance and Golf Course management. We are always looking for talented individuals who want to give back to the club.

As the Holiday season approaches, Twin Lakes is happy to host your corporate or family party. Please reach out to Molly in our office (mlemaota@twinlakesgolf.net) for pricing and to secure dates.

Additionally, Twin Lakes hosts outside golf tournaments. These are a critical source of income for the club. If your company is interested in renting the course for a corporate tournament, please contact Kathy or Tom!

Sincerely,

Erika Sheffield-Stull

GENERAL MANAGER

Happy September everyone!  Wow, I can’t believe the summer is almost over!
As we say goodbye to the summer months, I hope everyone has enjoyed the pool. I want to express a big Thank You to Lillian Tucker, our pool manager, and her lifeguard staff, for all their hard work this summer.  We will keep the pool open for the next two weekends based on the decent weather forecast, then we will monitor the weather after that. As long as we have decent weather and lifeguards available, the pool will be kept open for weekends.
It was so fun having the band for the last Couple’s Labor Day Weekend shotgun.  We had a great turnout with 71 players and then many more joined in later in the evening to enjoy the music of Soul Funktion.  It was a great way to end the summer golf season!

If you enjoyed that event, you will love New Year’s Eve!  Please make sure to join us for a very unique and exciting event to end this year.  We have invited Soul Funktion back to entertain the crowd with their upbeat dance music.  It will be a very fun event and a great way to celebrate the new year with all of your friends.
I look forward to seeing you all out here on Friday nights for the member drawing!! It is a fun time to join your friends and relax after a long week.  See you at the club!

Boy has our summer flown by.  It seems like we just got started.  But now that September is here, it means the last few scheduled outside tournaments and aerification is upon us.  John Leslie and his crew will be working on the green aerification beginning the week of the 28th.  We had this scheduled originally for Monday, Sept 8 so please mark down the change in your calendars.  We will be starting on Sunday night and working our way through Monday.  The course will be closed all day on Monday the 29th.  Be on the lookout for a constant contact message later this month with more details as to which tee we will start on Tuesday, Oct 1.

I mentioned that we have a couple of outside events- Thursday, Sept 4 is the Seattle University Baseball Tournament; Friday, Sept 5 is the Washington Glass Tournament.  The golf course will be closed to play both days.  The driving range will be open from 2-4pm on Thursday and then closed 4-5:30pm to clean pick balls for Friday’s event.  On Friday, the range will be open after 2pm and then closed for our usual clean pick around 4:30pm so that we have balls for the weekend.

It’s back to school time and that means back to high school golf as well.  Both Decatur and Todd Beamer High Schools have started their practices with matches to follow shortly.  They have practice Monday thru Thursday after school starting around 2:30, as well as matches set on Mondays and Thursday’s so, please plan accordingly when coming out to use the driving range, putting/chipping greens.    If you come out to practice between 2:30-3:30pm, we will make room for you on the range, but it will be more comfortable for you to work around your schedules around these times.  Please note that part of their arrangement is to pick balls up after they hit them.  This will be hard to accomplish if we have members hitting at the same time as they are finishing range practice.

Congratulations go out to Sharon Lorenzo and Andrew Lettice for winning this year’s Ladies Club Championship and Men’s Club Championship.  Our Senior Club Championship is Rick Schlehofer.  Our Men’s President’s Cup Match Play Championship is still in process.  All the first matches are being completed this weekend with the second set to be completed by Sept 16th.

We will be holding The Fall 2 Man event on the 20th & 21st .  Saturday’s format is Better Ball points and Sunday’s format is a scramble in the morning with a 9-hole chapman in the afternoon.  $75 Entry per person includes lunch in between Sunday’s rounds.  For those new to this event, it is a blast.  My hope is to see some of the new members and those members that haven’t played in the past give it a try as this is a fun Stableford event.  If you need help finding a partner, stop by the pro shop and let us know how we can help.  GGID tlfall25

The Winward Cup is Sunday, Sept 28th for the men’s league final event.  We will be sending out the email notification for golf and dinner sign ups next week.  All Men’s League participants are welcome for golf and dinner as it is included in your league entry at the beginning of the year.  GGID tlml25

Mark your Calendars

Sunday, October 5th as we will be having our 1st Annual Couples Championship.

Sat & Sun October 11 we will be playing host to the Twin Lakes Amateur.  The event will be 12:30 Shotgun start on Saturday.  Please note:  The tee sheet will have limited play in the morning on Saturday (7:30 – 9am) to accommodate the field of players for the Twin Lakes Amateur.

The second event in October is the Ryder Cup on the weekend of Oct 18 & 19.  More information about this event is to come as we will have three captains this year, Myself, Ben Bergner, and Tom Coburn.  Clear your calendars so that you can participate in this event.  Only 36 players in the field will be divided among the 3 teams.  Team Bergner are the defending champions.

Our Sandy Award this month goes to both Terri LaRock Stewart and Kim Crahan.  We took it off the course and into the Clubhouse for our final award recognitions.  Both Terri and Kim have worked tirelessly on our clubhouse bathrooms keeping them up to date with fixtures, pictures, paint, and décor.  We appreciate all their hard work and enthusiasm to keep our clubhouse and outside bathrooms up to date.  Thank you, Terri and Kim!

I hope that everyone enjoys the upcoming weather this week and stays hydrated and cool the next few days – See you around the club.

Greens Committee

It has been another fun summer of golf at Twin Lakes. We would like to recognize the hard work and dedication of John Leslie and his crew; the long summer days and dry weather can create many challenges and their persistence has allowed us to continue to play a challenging and fun golf course. We also would like to highlight the Monday Morning Maintenance team; they just passed their 1 year anniversary and have produced more than 800 volunteer hours and delivered over 250 cart loads of debris. Thank you to all for your contribution to the golf course.

With the dry weather, John has needed to use a higher volume of water on the course. This increase in water has helped green up many areas, but unfortunately it has also created challenges. Recently, several irrigation heads stuck and blew up which soaked parts of multiple greens. This led to anthracnose disease issues in some areas, mostly in low lying areas of greens such as #1,2,3,10 and 12. Treatments have been somewhat hampered by a busy golf event schedule, however John has been able to treat and spray these areas multiple times and expects the issues to be controlled and for the affected areas to bounce back.

During this busy time of year, projects and improvements are still happening:

● Sandtraps- the crew has worked on renovating many of them and we are working on a list of bunkers to continue to renovate and/or remove

● Hole 15 hillside clean up- continue to spray and treat this area- hillside is getting firmer

● Filled more holes on cart paths with gravel which has helped

Potential upcoming projects we have discussed:

● Continue wood chip disbursement throughout the course

● Hole 3 hillside clean up in between blue and white tees

● Crushed gravel fill on areas near and around cart paths

As a reminder to all members and your guests, please do your part to assist with course conditions by following cart path rules, repairing pitch and ball marks, and sanding your divots. These small efforts add up in a big way and help the golf course recover more quickly.

If you have any ideas you would like the Greens Committee to address, you are always welcome to reach out. For other questions, comments, or concerns please email tpac14@gmail.com and/or ssealey16@gmail.com and we will review with the committee.

Thank you,

Women’s Division

We closed out a very busy August, the weather was great and we had a lot of fun.

Our Women’s Division Championship was really a blast. Everyone who played was a winner! Congratulations to Sharon Lorenzo on her 7th win in a row. Anna Lee and Minhee Chung fought hard and deserve congratulations too. Anna was the Runner-up and Minhee was Low Net of the field. Unfortunately, we had to invoke the 90-degree rule and cancel the horserace, first time that has happened in a long while.

Partners Tournament was 2 good days of competition. There was a 3-way tie for first place and, chair of this event, Kim Crahan and her partner Suzy Eberle won out with their point accumulation on day 2. Sharon Lorenzo and Michong Kim placed 2nd and Sue Sohn and Kaein Gim came in 3rd. Nice work ladies! Congratulations!

The Captain’s Cup was wrapped up with a final match between Angela Lee and Minhee Chung. Angela played a really excellent game and is now our Captain’s Cup Champion.

Looking forward to September, by the time you read this we will have had the WSWGA All State Medal competition on September 2nd. I will find out the winning club at the WSWGA Fall meeting in October. I hope it’s us!

I am very happy to say that we have 6 women playing in the WSWGA Senior Championship at Bellingham G&CC on September 8th & 9th. Sharon Lorenzo, Kim Crahan, Gayla Dahl, Janet Sage, Kathleen Ouellet and Sally Irvine. I would encourage all of you 50 years or older to think about playing next year at Olympia C&GC. We will be hosting this tournament in 2028.

Our Fall Field Day is on September 23rd. Janet Sage and Sue Sohn have a fun day planned. If you have questions, please ask one of them. We will have a shotgun start and several fun competitions going on all at once. Hopefully Golf Genius will be able to decipher our scorecards. Everyone wins in this fun day so be sure to sign up. To cap off the day there will be a putting contest and winners will be paid cash from the “3 Putt Jar” that we have all been contributing to all year. Putt well and get some of your money back.

Our August Trivia Night was hosted by Joel Garrido to a lively crowd of Friday night revelers.  The categories were sports, music and Seattle facts that uncovered interesting information one never knew, were a good guess, or had surged back into memory.  After resolving a number of ties, the winners came from Randy Russell’s team who took possession of the trophy for now.
